Local Unit & Position Description

DNV GL’s Wind Turbine Test Team conducts high quality measurements to assure wind turbine owners, investors and manufacturers that their assets will meet specifications of power generation, noise, and loading when placed in operation. We are engineers, scientists, and project managers dedicated to the success of the wind energy industry.

 

The Candidate We Seek

  • Is passionate about contributing to the transition to renewable energy.
  • Is an ambitious engineer seeking a challenging and diverse workload including:
  • Managing projects between $50,000 and $1,000,000,
  • Communicating technical and commercial topics with turbine owners, operators, and manufacturers,
  • Designing and building measurement hardware in compliance with international standards,
  • Commissioning measurement hardware in the field at active wind projects,
  • Critical, objective, and in-depth analysis of time-series data, and
  • Effective technical writing to a broad audience.
  • Has skill and experience managing multiple clients and projects independently, and simultaneously.
  • Is excited to explore data and find deeper reasons for the results.
  • Identifies challenges and provides creative hardware, software, and logistical solutions.
  • Enjoys collaborating and communicating with colleagues and clients in person, via phone, and by email.
  • Thrives in a dynamic environment, and proactively plans for deadlines and anticipates hurdles.
  • Doesn’t compromise on safety, quality, or integrity, even under pressure.

Is enthusiastic to reside in Seattle, Portland or Montreal  and travel (~20%) to wind farms across the continent.

Primary Responsibilities at Office (~80%):

  • Project management of wind turbine measurements (scope, schedule, costs)
  • Test planning including contract review, technical analysis and documentation
  • Measurement equipment specification, procurement, preparation
  • Data monitoring and analysis to international standards and internal best practices
  • Technical report writing, critical reviewing and professional presentation to clients

 

Primary Responsibilities at Wind Farms (~20%):

  • Inspection, verification and commissioning of as-built measurement systems to designed plans
  • Climbing wind turbines and meteorological masts applying safety policies and training
  • Installation and calibration of measurement systems
  • Troubleshooting data acquisition systems and sensors

 

Additional Tasks May Include:

  • Business development through lead generation and proposal writing
  • Developing tools and processes to continuously improve quality and value of delivery

 

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering. Or Bachelor’s degree in another discipline and minimum of 4 years of relevant wind energy consulting experience
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering.
  • Previous renewable energy, consulting, project management, electronics experience, or credentials.
  • Data acquisition system or remote sensing experience.
  • MATLAB, Python, R programming experience.

 

Physical abilities necessary to perform regular functions of the job:

  • Normal office environment, occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs., regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching
  • Occasional air travel to wind farms, other offices, and conferences (up to 20% annually, sometimes long distance)
  • Occasional work outdoors in harsh conditions including but not limited to climbing stairs and ladders to ascend wind turbines or met masts, traveling by car up to six hours and walking on uneven terrain
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to meet deadlines and business needs
  • Valid driver license required and acceptable driving record meeting company requirements; ability to rent a vehicle
  • Ability to work in the U.S or in Canada
