    DNV GL is looking to recruit a Team Lead Wind Energy Engineer in our Cape Town office, South Africa, as part of an ongoing increase in capacity to meet the market needs.  The role is technical in nature and would suit someone looking for a technical commercial and customer facing role, whom is driven to support and lead their team in both personal development and delivery to our customers’ expectations.  

    This appointment is with the Renewables Advisory business within DNV GL. DNV GL is one of the world’s largest provider of independent renewable energy advice and a recognised authority in onshore wind energy. We are also at the forefront of the offshore wind, wave, tidal and solar sectors. Our team of dedicated experts are present in all major and emerging global markets for renewable energy.

    The Team Lead, reporting to the Renewable Projects Head of Department (HoD), will work within the Renewables Projects department to lead and develop the team in the Cape Town office as well as to promote and deliver DNV GL's services to our customers.

    As well as the team lead responsibilities (approximately 20% of your time), the role will involve providing technical consulting services throughout the development, procurement, construction and operation phases of renewable energy projects, to investors, lenders as well as owners.

    While currently the role would be focused on the African onshore wind market, there will be opportunities longer-term to be involved in broader geographic markets as well as both offshore wind and solar.


     As a Team Lead and Senior Engineer, the individual will be expected to:

    • Plan and resource multiple projects involving your team members (including projects which you will be undertaking) to ensure work is conducted within timescales and to budget.
    • Co-ordinate the resourcing of work with other Team Leads and Heads of Department as appropriate.
    • Promote, monitor and ensure the teams work meets the required standards and follows best practice guidelines (as delegated by HoD).
    • Create a team spirit and good working environment for the team.
    • Responsible for facilitating the team member’s individual performance management and development. At the goal setting and end of year reviews Heads of Department may join the meetings with the Team Lead and individual.
    • Encourage and ensure that lessons learnt and latest developments are shared across the team.
    • Assist with business development as directed, in coordination with Key Value Proposition Leaders and Business Leads.
    • Support the recruitment, training and performance management of staff within the team.
    • Provide support, management and technical Leadership to your assigned team, including mentoring and training of staff. This will specifically include:-
      • Holding regular meetings with individuals to provide feedback on project progress
      • Actively support the competence development of individuals
      • Provide support, coaching to staff on technical and soft skill issues
    • Act as an escalation point for enquires raised by the team. Any matter relating to employee’s terms and conditions of employment should be discussed with HoD.
    • Provide support to the HoD in the promotion and presentation of the team/department strategy and plans where appropriate.
    • Represent DNV GL, both during execution of your projects as well as market and business development events.
    • Work on due diligence projects, including reviewing of documentation relating to wind conditions, turbine suitability, ground conditions, planning and construction.
    • Contract review work including review of clauses, technical specification and the allocation of risk to relevant parties.
    • Be involved with contract negotiation alongside the customer's legal team.
    • Review the financial model for projects including revenue assumptions, capital costs and operations costs.
    • Manage due diligence, construction monitoring, inspections and measurements as well as owner’s engineering projects.
    • Undertake periodic site visits and inspections.
    • Support the continuous improvement of the business through the development of tools and processes as well as business development.
    • Any other appropriate duties as directed by line management.

    The project work is often fast paced with tight timeframes.  The candidate must be willing to work with complex tasks under such deadline pressure, and be comfortable in managing workflow to deliver work on time (working with line manager and other team members to allocate work effectively).

    Position Qualifications


    • Minimum 5-8 years experience in the renewables industry in a technical consulting capacity.
    • Ability to provide a team with a clear sense of direction, inspires and co-ordinates others and keeps them focused on objectives.
    • Ability to develop people through delegation, empowerment and coaching; promotes career and self-development.
    • Communicates in a clear, precise and structured way; speaks with authority and conviction; presents effectively.
    • An appropriate degree/higher degree in an engineering subject.
    • A team player with energy and enthusiasm.
    • Proven ability to produce clear written reports and communicate verbally in English.
    • Demonstrable ability to deliver complex tasks to tight timelines.
    • Good organisation and time management skills.
    • Adaptability, and able to cope with a wide variety of tasks.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Strong commercial acumen.
    • Good IT skills, and experience using MS Office suite packages. 


    • Previous experience in performing due diligence activities.
    • Good understanding of wind energy and previous experience in wind lender and owner’s engineer activities.
    • Understanding of standard contract forms in construction, in particular for renewable energy projects.
    • Good understanding of project finance structures and the financial models for wind farm projects.
    • Contributes to identifying and seizing commercial opportunities; has a strong positive impact on business growth and profitability.
