    DNV GL – Energy’s Distributed Energy Resources and Storage team is seeking a Safety & Testing Engineer with expertise in energy storage, CFD, fire, and explosion modeling, codes and safety, and fire and destructive testing to work within the newly formed Energy Storage Safety and Testing Group. This position will be ideally be based in Columbus, Ohio; Chalfont, Pennsylvania or Rochester, New York office, however, other office locations can be considered as well.


    The ideal candidate will have a strong background in two or more of the following areas with some experience in the others: energy storage, fire safety engineering and codes (NFPA and IFC), CFD/fire/explosion/plume modeling, risk analysis and destructive testing. The candidate should show a strong interest in energy storage, a passion for leading and defining the state of the art and impacting a rapidly growing industry in a meaningful way. The candidate should be comfortable with hands on work including fire based testing as well as field work and inspection and failure analysis.

     

    Tasks May Include

     

    • Independently manage a range of research, modeling, and review projects ranging from technology, hardware, code and safety reviews to site inspection, failure analysis and large scale fire testing
    • Manage development of new and innovative analytical tools and approaches that support ongoing project work and new business
    • Thought leadership through development of white papers, webinars, code development, industry speaking engagements, and cross industry and business area collaboration as energy storage permeates maritime, aviation, grid, and oil & gas industries.
    • Project Management and related tasks including monitoring budget, deliverables and client relationships for consulting projects
    • Provide expertise and process improvement to destructive testing, fire, gas, explosion and plume modeling, risk analysis, and code interpretation. 
    • Participate in new business development through proposal writing and direct sales. Build and maintain client relationships.
    • Provide input on strategic planning and marketing decisions
    • Work within and lead a team of multinational, multidisciplinary engineers and experts to deliver high-quality deliverables on time and on budget

    Position Qualifications

    Position Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Energy, Chemistry, Physics or in a related field
    • Minimum 2 years of experience on Electrical or Fire codes development, review activities, fire modeling, risk assessment or fire and destructive testing 
    • Experience with the fire service, electric or energy storage industry, or any industry adept in risk analysis and management 
    • Strong oral and written English communication and presentation skills, with an ability to develop and deliver presentations to senior executives and similar clients and DNV GL staff
    • Willingness to travel on a regular basis within North America and, on occasion, internationally
    • Strong MATLAB, LabVIEW, and general data management and analysis skills and results associated with those tools
    • We conduct pre-employment drug and background screening

     

    Preferred Skills (Not required)

     

    • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Energy, Chemistry, Physics or related field
    • A solid network of industry contacts
    • Strong ability to provide clear and concise business writing materials in formats that include PowerPoint slides, business plans, white papers, and other material for mid-level and executive client delivery, marketing and thought leadership
    • Experience in developing and delivering publications in trade journals, presentations at conferences, or in articulating points of view
    • Direct experience with CFD modeling software, Safeti/PHAST, BowtieXP or other risk, gas or explosion modeling software 
    • Experience with UL, IEC, IEEE and ASTM standards or NFPA, IFC/IBC/IRC/IMC/ICC, or IEC codes or DNV GL or similar class rules. Experience with utility or industry best practice, guidelines and standards are also desirable.
    • Knowledge of electricity markets, trends in renewables and storage deployment, and policy decisions driving these trends
    • Willingness and ability to travel, up to 50% of the time
    • Knowledge of the US or international fire service, trends in firefighting and code enforcement
