    DNV GL is seeking a Civil Engineer to address the growth of the Taiwan wind and solar energy markets. The Civil Engineer will act as a key member of the APAC civil engineering team, engaged in analysis, design review, construction observation, and analysis of structural failures of wind and solar energy systems. The engineer in this position will have a highly visible role and be involved in many wind and solar energy projects in APAC. This position is based out of our Taiwan office.


    Tasks May Include

    • Conduct detailed technical review and independent assessment of civil construction documentation including:
      • Plans and specifications;
      • Design calculations and studies;
      • Construction submittals;
      • Test documentation;
      • Construction job books and QA/QC documentation;
      • Foundation drawings and calculations;
      • Geotechnical reports;
      • Ground improvement recommendations and documentation;
      • Seismic hazard analyses;
      • Liquefaction hazard evaluation and mitigation recommendations.
    • Conduct construction monitoring inspections of projects to verify compliance with:
      • Construction plans and specifications, geotechnical reports;
      • Applicable code requirements and standards and good construction practice;
    • Develop conceptual designs and technical specifications, manage and review proposals, and support contract negotiations on behalf of clients;
    • Support Construction Management activities through monitoring/management of costs, progress, contract interface, and quality programs, and facilitation of construction problem resolution;
    • Write detailed reports of reviews and inspections;
    • Evaluation and root cause analyses of wind and solar farm structural and geotechnical failures
    • Owner’s Engineering and project development support
    • Evaluation of pre-market design concepts for Wind and Solar Energy structural support systems

    Position Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree Civil (Geotechnical) or Structural Engineering 
    • Minimum 3 of structural and / or geotechnical engineering design experience. Specific experience with wind turbine foundations, electrical transmission structures and solar photovoltaic mounting structures will be looked upon favourably.
    • Proficiency in a range of international structural design standards, particularly those in common use in the Asia Pacific region (including ACI-318, AISI, etc.)
    • Proficiency in SAP, STAAD (or similar) and other common structural analysis programs
    • Proficiency in CAD software i.e AutoCAD
    • Experience reviewing geotechnical site investigation reports and laboratory test results
    • Understanding of typical construction methods for large reinforced concrete structures
    • Proven HSE mindset and demonstrated behaviour-based safety mentality
    • Able to work independently, and make independent decisions when called for
    • Able to work with a geographically diverse team, within the APAC region and internationally
    • Maintain a flexible schedule and be able to keep in contact with international offices.
    • Must be able to meet the requirements to drive for company business
    • Willingness and ability to travel, up to 30% of the time
    • Must be able to use common construction personal protective equipment, walk over uneven terrain, climb ladders
    • Ability to walk over rough or slippery terrain as experienced on heavy construction sites
    • Comfortable working at heights
    • Willingness to work in inclement weather conditions on occasion
    • Strong written and verbal Chinese and English communication skills

    Preferred Skills:


    • Understanding of fatigue in structures. A detailed understanding of fatigue in reinforced concrete subject to high cycle demand (Eurocode, CEB FIP MC 2010, DNV OS C502) will be looked upon favourably.
    • Master of Science – Civil or Structural Engineering preferred plus 3+ years of structural engineering design
    • Prior research or design experience with reinforced concrete wind turbine foundations
    • Knowledge of geophysical investigation techniques.
    • Understanding of cyclic degradation of subgrade materials
    • Understanding of geotechnical and civil site design aspects of wind and solar farm projects.
    • Understanding of foundation systems for utility scale onshore wind turbines
    • Understanding of foundation and mounting structure systems for utility scale photovoltaic installations
    • Understanding of common Solar PV foundation systems and geotechnical aspects of design
    • Prior research or design experience with wind-induced dynamic loading of Solar PV structural support systems
    • Prior experience in Independent Engineering
    • Abilities in foreign languages, other language skill will be looked upon favourably
    • Appropriate Professional Engineer certification
