    The Practice Leader, Residential Solar Independent Engineering is multi-faceted position offering opportunities to work directly with the largest customers and investors in the residential solar and storage sector, drive thought development and innovation activities, and deliver top-quality technical analysis to support large financing transactions.

    DNV GL – Energy’s Renewables Advisory group is seeking a Practice Leader to join our Solar Independent Engineering (IE) team to lead our residential solar independent engineering practice. DNV GL is the world’s leading renewable energy consultant, and DNV GL’s Solar IE team holds a substantial market position for independent engineering services to support financing and construction of solar and storage energy projects in North America, including a leading position in the market for IE services for residential solar and storage financings. Our staff are experts and thought leaders in the industry, and our team provides technical consulting and independent engineering services for solar project developers, financial institutions, and investors who rely upon our reports as part of their investment decision making process.
    The Practice Leader is responsible for the execution of business development to maintain our customer relationships and grow our residential solar IE practice, and for the advancement of our technical methods and capabilities, including industry-facing thought leadership. The Practice Leader will additionally be responsible for project managing the technical due diligence review process to support the financing of residential solar and storage project portfolios in North America, normally comprised of tens of thousands of rooftop systems per portfolio, including communicating and resolving technical issues with clients and lenders/investors.


    This position is based out of our San Diego CA, Portland OR, Oakland CA, Seattle WA, Austin TX, Chalfont PA, or Medford MA offices.

    Tasks Include

    • Driving financial performance of the residential solar business within DNV GL through development of sales pipeline, optimization of budgets and project margins, and delivery of outstanding customer service.
    • Leading customer relationship management and business development efforts for our residential solar customers via strategic engagement as well as project-specific interactions. Developing and winning proposals for scopes of services related to due diligence work.
    • Advancing thought leadership and innovation initiatives related to the residential solar market, focusing on technology, financing, operations, and data analytics issues.
    • Coordinating and executing the technical review process for commercial projects with inputs from internal specialists (including civil and electrical engineering, energy assessment, PV and storage technology experts, permitting, site inspectors, etc).
    • Providing technical direction and oversight to the unique demands of energy assessment for residential solar portfolios, including sampling methodology and statistical data evaluation.
    • Performing portions of the due diligence reviews, including lease and performance guarantee contracts, O&M strategy evaluations, and financial model (OPEX and CAPEX) reviews.
    • Managing project budget and timeline, as well as customer communication and supporting the financial closing process.
    • Coordinating input from technical specialists and writing due diligence reports.
    • Discussing and resolving technical issues with project proponents and lenders/investors, including coordinating input on such issues from internal technical specialists as necessary.
    • Participating in due diligence activities for utility-scale and C&I/community scale solar projects as a capable project manager supporting the broader solar IE team as needed.
    • Prioritizing QHSE considerations within the team to ensure safe execution and healthy work environment.

    Position Qualifications



    • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related energy required. Master’s preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the solar industry performing technical evaluation or engaged in the financing process for solar projects.
    • Familiarity with solar energy industry technology (modules, inverters, mounting system, balance of system, storage technology, etc.) and contracts (residential leases, performance guarantees, construction, supply, operations, interconnection, offtake, and/or asset management contracts)
    • Working understanding of budgets and financial models, and ability to validate technical inputs for O&M costs and production/revenues
    • Project management and time management skills, including an ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines and proven track record in establishing and maintaining good relations with clients
    • Some experience in at least one of the following: solar industry construction and operating contracts, solar project construction, operations/asset management, solar project design/development, module/inverter technology, power marketing/offtake contracting, or energy storage technology and implementation preferred. Having experience in the wind industry or other renewables may be advantageous
    • Willingness and ability to travel, up to 20% of the time
    • Able to sit for long periods of time, when working in office; but also climb rooftops with appropriate gear and walk over rough or slippery terrain as experienced on heavy construction sites 
    • Solution-oriented thinking skills – identifying technical risks and formulating solutions that enable financing/investment to proceed on the basis of solid technical input
    • Displaying high integrity and honesty – clients rely on DNV GL’s independence and its responsibility to perform a rigorous but fair review of a project
    • Fluent in MS Office products
    • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including ability to write clear and detailed technical reports, presentations, and emails, and to clearly communicate complex technical issues to a non-technical audience
