The current 1.5 kV railway traction power supply is reaching its limits in the Netherlands as it creates large energy transport losses and has limited re-generative braking capacity. Moreover, as the frequency of trains is constantly increasing, the railway electricity network will need to be upgraded in the future to respond to the increasing power demand. For this reason, an upgrade to a 3 kV railway traction power supply is currently being considered. The upgrade to a 3 kV system would significantly reduce the energy transport losses and would also increase the maximum traction power consumption and re-generative braking capacity.
Focus of this project
-Evaluation of the possible technical solutions for the transformation of the existing 1.5 kV traction power supply into a 3 kV system.
- Literature review will first be performed in order to investigate the different technical solutions that could be applied. After collecting the most relevant technical solutions, each technical option will be evaluated.
- For each technical option, the main advantages and disadvantages will be addressed, and a cost and benefit analysis will be performed (both qualitative and quantitative analysis).
-After evaluating and comparing all the relevant technical concepts for the upgrade to a 3 kV system, one concept will be selected, based on the evaluation criteria set by the railway electricity network operators.
*After successful completion of the project, you will be considered for collaboration on a Master Thesis project. The selected technical solution will be the input for the case study of the modeling phase. Simulations will be performed to verify the functionality of the proposed concept.
