Local Unit & Position Description

Bladed is the global industry-leading wind turbine design software used by wind turbine manufacturers, consultants, researchers and for certification. At the core of Bladed is its simulation engine which has been extensively validated against measured data from a wide range of turbines.

 

We are looking for an engineer with deep knowledge of structural and/or multibody dynamics, to focus on improving Bladed’s structural dynamics modelling, and collaborate with other structural dynamics experts in DNV and in the wider industry.

 

Example structural dynamics developments in the product roadmap include:

  • Simulation of wind turbine blade cross-section full 6x6 mass and stiffness matrices to capture bend-twist coupling dynamics
  • Incorporation of local superelements into support structure models
  • Extensions to models of seismic effects on the structural response
  • Co-simulation with other offshore wind turbine modelling tools, or integration with other structural dynamics libraries

The successful applicant will have relevant experience from academia or industry to understand best practice in multibody dynamics and/or structural dynamics modelling, ideally in the context of wind turbines, aero-elastics or offshore structures. They will contribute to the method development for Bladed’s structural dynamics engine, and implement new features and improvements in C++ code.

 

The role will also involve other general analytical development activities in Bladed, in technical areas such as integrator methods, linearisation, mechanical systems, aero-elasticity and coupled system dynamics. The role includes working directly with customers and academics on theory and implementations.

 

Other key routine tasks include:

  • Contribute to verification of new engineering models.
  • Fix defects identified through testing or reported by customers.
  • Implement comprehensive automated code unit tests and system tests.
  • Work with some legacy code, balancing desire to rewrite / re-factor with timely delivery of new features.
  • Support Bladed users in their work by helping them investigate unexpected results and find solutions to modelling issues.

Today we have 20 engineering professionals blending physics and mechanics, software engineering, user experience and customer support. We are organised as multiple scrum teams with the majority located in UK (Bristol) and with some developers in Denmark and Germany. For experienced applicants, this role is open to remote working within 2 hours of the UK time zone. Occasional travel to Bristol will be required. 

Position Qualifications

Required experience

  • Proven significant expertise in structural dynamics or flexible multibody dynamics
  • Experience with object orientated code development (preferably in C++)

Desirable experience

  • PhD in structural dynamics, multibody dynamics or equivalent industrial experience
  • Knowledge of wind turbine dynamics and loads analysis
  • Knowledge of aero-elasticity and stability
  • Experience of development of aero-elastic simulation codes
  • Experience with offshore structures modelling and packages such as Sesam
  • Knowledge of Fortran
