Bladed is the global industry-leading wind turbine design tool used by wind turbine manufacturers, consultants, researchers and for certification. At the core of Bladed is its simulation engine which has been extensively validated against measured data from a wide range of turbines.


Bladed is currently going through a major programme of re-architecting and innovation to ensure that it retains its market-leading position into the 2020s and beyond – it’s an exciting time to join the team!


We are looking for an able and motivated engineer to join our engineering code development team. They will have an engineering / physics or similar background, and be skilled in software development.


Upcoming feature developments for the Bladed engineering code include:

  • Improvements to structural dynamics models for the wind turbine blades and support structures
  • Development of APIs for interaction with other simulation codes
  • Integration of workflows and engineering models with DNV’s Sesam software for offshore support structures
  • Improvements to various sub-models in Bladed, such as mechanical device modelling, aerodynamics and linearisation

In the role you may:

  • Contribute to the design and development of new features in the Bladed engineering code.
  • Help to make improvements in the design and code quality of existing Bladed engineering code using mainly C++ and FORTRAN.
  • Perform verification and testing of new engineering models.
  • Fix defects identified through testing and reported by the customer.
  • Work with some legacy code, balancing desire to rewrite / re-factor with timely delivery of new features.
  • Support Bladed users in their work by helping them investigate unexpected results and find solutions to modelling issues.
  • Communicate your developments internally and externally (e.g. at industry conferences).

Today we have 20 engineering professionals blending physics and mechanics, software engineering, user experience and customer support. We are organised as multiple scrum teams with most people in UK (Bristol) and with some developers in Denmark and Germany. For experienced applicants, this role is open to remote working within 2 hours of the UK time zone. Occasional travel to Bristol will be required. 

Position Qualifications


  • 2:1 degree or above in engineering, physics or related discipline.
  • Proven software development ability, preferably in a numerical / scientific context using object orientated programming.
  • Strong interest in physical modelling / simulation work.


  • Experience in wind turbine structural dynamics, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics etc.
  • Experience developing wind turbine aero-elastic codes.
  • Experience in software architecture and design.
  • Knowledge of FORTRAN and C++ programming.
  • Experience of development for Linux
  • Experience of optimising algorithms and software performance.
  • Knowledge of one or more scripting languages e.g. Python.
