Local Unit & Position Description

DNV is seeking a talented and motivated Principal Structural Engineer to join our London’s Jack-Up, Geotechnical and Metocean team.

 

The team of 18 structural, mechanical, geotechnical and metocean engineers is at the forefront of implementing the green energy transition around the world today and has a focus on the installation and operation of jack-up vessels, providing sophisticated solutions and engineering assessments to support offshore renewable energy installation projects around the globe, as well as ensuring safe operations for our oil and gas customers.

 

The team, who serves as the global technical hub for this service line, specialise in jack-up site assessments and associated consultancy services to assure safe marine operations related to installation and transportation of jack-ups and other offshore structures.

 

The purpose of the role is to both deliver technical work and management of projects, business development and development of others through supporting & mentoring the Structural Engineering team (currently consisting of 7 people – a part-time Principal Specialist, 2 Senior Engineers, 2 Engineers and 2 Graduates, but looking to grow over the next year).

 

The candidate is expected to:

  • Be an experienced chartered engineer in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil, structural, mechanical), ideally with an offshore industry bias (Oil&Gas or Renewables).
  • Support supervision, review and verification of the execution of the team’s projects, nurture internal and external customer relationships, identify new work opportunities, coordinate the bidding and execution of services, develop a high calibre team to add value to the business, and at all times assure the highest quality of service delivery to meet customer requirements within the timeframe, costs and quality standards established.
  • Interface with a wide range of disciplines within the company, and work with clients such as jack-up/ WTIV owners and operators, developers, design consultancies and construction contractors.

Key accountabilities will relate to three types of activities:

 

1. Operations:

  • To work as technical lead on projects to accomplish the overall delivery of optimum solutions to clients with the timeframe, costs and quality standards established.
  • To carry technical responsibility for the Structural team, reporting to the Team Lead of the Jack-up, Geotechnical and Metocean engineering team.
  • Support the Team Lead to develop and grow the Jack-up, Geotech & Metocean business including preparation of tenders.

2. Customer focus, sales and marketing:

  • To win work from new and existing customers by identifying opportunities for wider integration of services, defining solutions for customers and bidding for contracts.
  • To act as Customer/ Key Account Manager role and have regular meetings with existing customer network to grow existing services and develop new opportunities.
  • To work with the Business Development team to build productive customer relationships and identify new business opportunities.
  • To network with principal professionals outside DNV GL and actively take part in external forums.
  • To ensure continued customer satisfaction leading to high retention and repeat work.

3. People Management and Team Building:

  • To develop and maintain the technical capabilities of the unit and provide expert guidance and on-the-job training to team members on projects i.e. actively impart knowledge to others.
  • To support Team Lead in ensuring that internal processes for career planning and professional development are kept up to date for team members.
  • To initiate, facilitate and promote collaboration between teams across departments.

Position Qualifications

Qualifications

 

Essential:

  • Degree qualified in relevant engineering discipline.
  • A Chartered Engineer, with profound and proven experience of working in an engineering/ offshore consultancy, in the Oil&Gas or offshore wind industries.
  • Background in Offshore structures, Oil&Gas or Offshore Wind.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of MODU units (Jack-Ups/ Wind Turbine Installations Vessels).
  • Knowledge of structural analysis (e.g. fracture mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, stress analysis, structural design, wave dynamics, seismic design, engineering materials, etc.).
  • Methodical and proficient project management skills: ability to proactively plan and co-ordinate key activities. Ability to meet with prospective clients, to plan, price and win new work and to manage that work to completion both to budget and timeframe.
  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institutional body.

Desirable:

  • Operational expertise in the marine environment.
  • Previous experience in academia.
  • Experience conducting technical advisory assignments and third-party verification work.
  • Knowledge of industry assessment software (FEA (Abaqus/Ansys), AQWA, etc.).

 

Competency requirements, knowledge and abilities

 

Essential:

  • Excellent technical knowledge and experience of offshore structures with specialist knowledge of a relevant area (e.g. hydrodynamics, seismic actions, naval architecture, etc.).
  • Curious and solution oriented, with a keen interest and knowledge of offshore industry and project management.
  • Adaptable and reactive with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain high performance without compromising on quality, when working to challenging deadlines, with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent communicator to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders – including the ability to write clear and concise reports.  Able to robustly analyse and present complex solutions and ideas.
  • Expert in the use of MS office package.

Desirable:

  • Experience of supporting or leading business development activities.
  • Experience in training and mentoring of junior team members.
  • Commitment to innovation, embracing the need and drive for change to ensure a sustainable competitive business advantage.
  • Awareness of the many approaches to Structural Design and the ability to advise on methods of design and construction.
  • Flexibility to travel occasionally (in the UK and overseas), possibly offshore should the need arise.
