Local Unit & Position Description

The Environment Project Manager is responsible for leading project development and owner’s engineering activities, including the preparation of local, state/provincial, and national renewable energy permit applications, associated environmental and social impact studies, stakeholder engagement sessions, and land use and zoning permit applications for projects primarily in the U.S. Preferred candidates will have experience leading conditional use permit applications (CUP), special use permit applications (SUP), and environmental assessments or impact statements compliant with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).  The Project Manager may also be engaged in leading proposal efforts, US business development for wind and solar facilities, as well as assisting with project due diligence activities. 


The Project Manager will join the multi-disciplinary EPS group within DNV GL. The dynamic working environment will require easily adaptable and technical employees to provide services across a wide range of active projects, including those in the development, design, construction, and operational phases of project lifecycles. DNV GL is looking for a versatile individual with experience and training in relevant fields such land use planning, landscape architecture, environmental science/engineering, or environmental law/policy or a similar field. The selected individual will be requested to occasionally undertake studies in their field of expertise, as well as manage projects for our North American and international customers.

The level of the position will be commensurate with the level of experience.

Tasks may include:

  • Conduct the following studies:
    • Site selection and characterization studies;
    • Permitting and compliance matrix;
    • Technical permitting studies, such as visual impact assessments, and management plans;
    • Lead environmental assessments and environmental impact statements; and
    • Zoning variance, local ordinance compliance, conditional use, and other permit applications.
  • Set project milestones for scope, schedule, and budget and ensure milestones are met;
  • Perform technical checking and initial approval of certain work products conducted by junior staff;
  • Collaborate directly with other business groups to complete multi-disciplinary deliverables;
  • Attend agency and municipality meetings, open houses, and stakeholder engagement sessions;
  • Prepare or coordinate standard proposals and bids;
  • Support the Head of Section in preparing special or large-scale proposals and bids; and
  • Promote the EPS Group through professional engagement with existing and potential clients;
  • Actively seek out practical and realistic business development opportunities in the US market;
  • Give technical presentations and participate in panel discussions at industry workshops and conferences;
  • Participate in R&D projects under the coordination of the Head of Section; and
  • Engage in facilitating innovative and new service offerings to anticipate/meet market needs.

Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, namely land use planning, landscape architecture, environmental planning, environmental science/engineering, or environmental law/policy;
  • 3+ years of experience with environmental and/or permitting in the renewable energy industry and/or experience in regulatory affairs;
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience;
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental assessment regulatory frameworks in the US and the ability to quickly adapt to and learn new regulatory frameworks for international jurisdictions;
  • Comprehensive understanding of US wind and solar markets;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Word/Excel/Access;
  • Experience leading environmental permit applications;
  • Excellent analytical and reporting abilities;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Individual should display a positive, team-oriented attitude to match our friendly work environment;
  • Demonstrated skills in project coordination, agency consultation, and environmental analysis; and
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time domestically to conferences, client meetings, project sites, agency and internal meetings.

Preferred skills (not required):

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field, namely land use planning, landscape architecture, environmental planning, environmental science/engineering, or environmental law/policy;
  • Certified Planner (AICP);
  • Experience in conducting environmental and permitting due diligence reviews and understanding of international standards (Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards);
  • Experience leading proposals efforts and large environmental permit applications for energy projects.
