Job title: Power System Planning Consultant

Location: Dubai, UAE

Contract duration: Full time

Business Area: Energy Advisory

The consultant/engineer shall perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit analysis, power quality, dynamic stability, protection coordination, grid code compliance and network planning; so shall have hands on experience on performing such studies using industry standard tools such as PSS/E and PowerFactory working on complex T&D, industrial networks and mini grids. He shall have fundamental and conceptual knowledge of renewable power plants and challenges posed by them to the grid network. The role will involve working within the Power System Planning Team and support to the Renewables Team to perform renewable plants grid integration studies. Knowledge of system economics and regulations will be an advantage.

The work will also involve overall support on management of complex commercial and technical projects and resourced from multiple internal business streams.

Technical/Professional Competence

  • Bachelor/Master Degree in Electrical Engineering from reputed institutions; doctorate preferred;
  • More than 8 years of significant practical experience in power systems engineering and studies using industry standard tools such as PSS/E and PowerFactory working on complex T&D and industrial networks.
  • Significant practical relevant experience with Renewables projects (solar and wind) grid integration studies is required;
  • Expert in load flow studies, system loss calculations, short circuit analysis, transient & dynamic stability analysis, voltage stability analysis, arc flash, and voltage drop analysis;
  • Experience with scripts for performing studies.
  • Experience with other power systems study tools such as CYME, ETAP, PSCAD/EMTDC/ATP.EMTP and MATLAB/SIMULINK is also preferred;
  • Experience with grid economics and regulatory compliance/development of grid codes is preferable.
  • Functional knowledge of balance of plant, including transformer, switchgear, cables/overhead lines, reactors, inverters, technical specifications, earthing design calculation as per IEC/IEEE;
  • Proven experience as Project Manager in previous projects;
  • Ability to write and compose clear and accurate reports in English;
  • Superior organization, coaching and interpersonal skills, combined with effective leadership, decision-making, and communication;
  • Good IT skills, and experience using MS Office suite packages and AutoCAD or Microstation;
  • Knowledge of the Middle East and Africa markets and industry is a plus.

 

Power System Consultant is required to:

  • Project Management in Power System studies, grid integration studies with T&D and Industrial plants including Renewable Energy (onshore and offshore wind, solar) grid integration;
  • Establish and maintain power system studies and renewables grid related business for DNV GL’s Energy Advisory Services in Middle East and Africa;
  • Support on providing renewables technical advisory services.

Position Qualifications

The work also involves:

  • Liaise with industry suppliers, manage bidding processes and provide critical bid assessment;
  • Strategize to establish and maintain the business of power system planning in Middle East and Africa;
  • Support the continuous improvement of the methodology and documentation;
  • Ability to work in a pressurized consultancy environment – operating to tight timescales;
  • Willingness to work on site;
  • Adaptability, and able to cope with a wide variety of tasks;
  • Any other appropriate duties as directed by line management.

Key Internal and External Contacts (and frequency / method of contact):

  • The individual will be in regular contact (phone/email/meetings) with the Client and Client’s project team as well as construction contractors, stakeholders and other third parties;
  • The individual will be in regular contact with his/her own team, Line Manager and other Head of Sections;
  • The individual will work closely with the Renewables Team and other engineers in Dubai, and will have contact with the wider electrical community in DNV GL.

  • Reading, writing and speaking proficiency in English. French and/or Arabic is preferred.

Delivery and Results

  • Plans and executes work with required quality and within agreed schedule and budget;

  • Project Manager for small and medium sized projects including several competence areas;
  • Demonstrates clear accountability and ability to make own decisions in work.

Hours:

  • 40, per week, Sunday – Thursday. Hours are flexible, with starting times between 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 a.m.

Travel:

  • The candidate will be based in Dubai office;
  • Willing to travel frequently within the Middle East and Africa.
