Local Unit & Position Description


The Integrity Management practice of DNV GL supports clients in the oil and gas industry through provision of advisory services to manage the mechanical integrity of production, transmission, and distribution assets.  Among many areas of expertise, this team undertakes a wide range of integrity assessments on pressure systems (pressure vessels, pipelines and fittings)  for clients in the oil & gas industry, providing support throughout the asset life cycle.


The role of Mechanical Engineer will support and lead projects for fitness for service and/or vibration assessment for process plant and pipework on oil and gas assets, including gas processing, transmission and distribution facilities.  It is expected to operate across a number of areas within the practice, and will include opportunities for working on a range of oil & gas asset technology projects, including defect assessment, stress analysis, vibration monitoring and data analysis, and R&D.  The role will have responsibility for project delivery across the full life cycle, from proposal preparation, methodology development, analysis and reporting, through to recommendation and development of solutions.


This role will enable delivery of the current strong workload in this area in a cost-effective manner, and will help facilitate the planned growth of these services.  The Mechanical Engineer will directly report to a Team Leader, and be assigned to client projects under a Project Manager/Leader as required.

The role will include some work at customer offices and sites in the UK and overseas, with offshore assignments a possibility.


Primary responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Delivery of fitness for service and/or vibration assessment and analysis projects to cost, time and quality requirements
  • Accurate technical reporting requiring minimal revision following internal and external review;
  • Support business development activities, including identification of opportunities, writing of proposals, and engagement with existing and potential clients;
  • Support development of other team members through mentoring, coaching, training etc.
  • Provision of support for other related projects as required, including undertaking accompanied and unaccompanied site visits and inspections;
  • Comply with all applicable HS&E requirements for activities, especially for site-based work.

FFS(Fitness for Service) experience means, Mechanical engineer who is experienced in some of the following areas:

  • Defect assessments
  • Pipework stress analysis
  • Finite Element Analysis
  • Engineering critical assessments (including Fatigue/fracture)
  • Remnant life studies and life extension of ageing assets
  • Assessment of composites, steels and other materials
  • In-line inspections (ILI)
  • Non-destructive Testing (NDT)


The role will be primarily based at our office in Loughborough (UK), but will include work at other DNV GL offices and at customer sites as and when required, and will therefore require flexibility and willingness to work on short to medium term assignments in the UK, and offshore and overseas as required.

Position Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), Chartership would be an advantage
  • Experience of a mechanical engineering role in oil & gas industry or similar
  • Experience of finite element modelling using Abaqus, including dynamic analysis; and/or vibration testing and monitoring, and data analysis
  • Good communication in English (verbal and written) skills
  • Good team working and time management skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on short to medium term assignments in the UK, and offshore and overseas if required.
  • Overtime and the appropriate Short Term Assignment payment will be paid where applicable.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work unsociable hours when required
  • Computer literate, including experience with MS Office

Additional requirements would be an advantage:

  • Awareness of health and safety issues on industrial sites
  • A current UK driving licence
  • Prior experience of Matlab programming

Experience and knowledge in some the following areas, although not essential, would be an advantage:

  • Structural integrity assessment, including fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Advanced vibration and acoustics assessment techniques, including modal analysis
  • Pipework vibration assessment and screening methods
  • Modelling of composite materials using FEA
  • Pressure vessel design standards, such as ASME VIII and PD 5500
  • High pressure pipeline systems
  • Process plant operations
  • Pipework stress analysis using CAESAR II
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and permit to work systems on hazardous plant and/or construction projects
