The position is fully funded by the research project WinGrid, an EU-H2020 Grant under Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN). The overall goal of this project is to train and launch the next generation of researchers on power system integration issues associated with the large-scale deployment of wind generation, focusing particularly on the modelling and control aspects of wind turbine and grid interface design, system stability and robust implementation. The position is offered in relation to the research program at DNV-GL in Arnhem with appropriate visits to Aalborg University for the academic work leading to a Ph.D. Large-scale offshore wind farms, incorporating hundreds of wind turbines, are increasingly being built across Europe. Yet, the interactions between wind turbines in the same wind farm, and between different wind farms, pose new challenges to network stability and power quality. This project aims at developing a holistic approach to aggregating the control dynamics of wind turbines at the feeder- and plant-level. The dynamic interactions between wind turbines at different timescales, considering both the large- and small-disturbances from the power network, will be explored. Analytical models that can adequately capture the system oscillation modes will be developed and validated through control hardware -in-the-loop (CHIL).   This PhD stipend will be in collaboration with ABB Power Grids Research, Switzerland, and Aalborg University, Denmark. *After the PhD (3 years) a permanent contract within DNVGL is anticipated.
